Term Of The Week:

Internal rate of return (IRR) is a metric used in capital budgeting measuring the profitability of potential investments. Internal rate of return is a discount rate that makes the net present value (NPV) of all cash flows from a particular project equal to zero. IRR calculations rely on the same formula as NPV does.

3 Thing to Make You Smarter:

1. A District Court ruled that MetLife was not ‘Too Big to Fail.’ Andrew Ross Sorkin asks whether determining ‘Too Big to Fail’ may be too tricky for a generalist judge.

Term Of The Week:

Mezzanine financing is a hybrid of debt and equity financing that is typically used to finance the expansion of existing companies. Mezzanine financing is basically debt capital that gives the lender the rights to convert to an ownership or equity interest in the company if the loan is not paid back in time and in full. It is generally subordinated to debt provided by senior lenders such as banks and venture capital companies.

3 Thing to Make You Smarter:

1. Pfizer and Allergen scrapped their merger after the US Treasury announced new rules making corporate inversions more difficult.

2. Global Bond Yield plunges to 20-year low, serving as a warning sign for the global economy.

3. For 1Ls interested in transferring, consider The Antonin Scalia School of Law, or ASSoL for short.

Earned Income Credit (EIC) – A tax credit in the United States which benefits certain taxpayers who have low incomes from work in a particular tax year. The earned income credit (EIC) reduces the amount of tax owed on a dollar-for-dollar basis, and may result in a refund to the taxpayer if the amount of the credit is greater than the amount of tax owed.

Term Of The Week:

Yield to maturity (YTM) is the total return anticipated on a bond if the bond is held until the end of its lifetime. Yield to maturity is considered a long-term bond yield, but is expressed as an annual rate. In other words, it is the internal rate of return of an investment in a bond if the investor holds the bond until maturity and if all payments are made as scheduled.

Core Inflation – Core inflation is a measure of inflation that excludes certain items that face volatile price movements. Core inflation eliminates products that can have temporary price shocks because these shocks can diverge from the overall trend of inflation and give a false measure of inflation.

Recession – The right of an individual involved in a contract to return to a state identical to that before they entered into the agreement, due to courts not recognizing the contract as legally binding. In many cases, rescission may be an option if there is a material error in the contract, among other reasons.

TERM OF THE WEEK:

Corporate Inversion – Re-incorporating a company overseas in order to reduce the tax burden on income earned abroad. Corporate inversion as a strategy is used by companies that receive a significant portion of their income from foreign sources, since that income is taxed both abroad and in the country of incorporation. Companies undertaking this strategy are likely to select a country that has lower tax rates and less stringent corporate governance requirements.

3 THINGS THAT WILL MAKE YOU SMARTER:

1. Good corporate governance can improve a company’s bottom line. A story on the B Corporation and its high standards of corporate governance and transparency.

2. Five Weird Capital Markets Observations Concerning Dell’s Big Bid for EMC. The issuance of a lot of fresh debt and the use of tracking stock are just some of the offer’s complications.

3. Many New Yorkers would like to live in a bar bathroom. A prank want ad exposes the city’s insane real-estate market.
